NEW WEDGE RULES

What does the 2010 Wedge Ruling mean? The rule downsizes groove volume and limits edge sharpness for all grooves manufactured after January 1st 2010, essentially limiting the amount of backspin a golfer can generate and thus placing more emphasis on hitting the fairway!
What are the implications for the Amateur? If your short game control rescues your long game then you'll realise how important grooves are to your overall score. Larger grooves have the ability to channel away more material, such as water or grass, and increase contact with the ball. Likewise, sharper grooves facilitate a more spin or 'grab' between club and ball, even in the presence of debris.
Whereas manufacturers can no longer produce Wedges with 'old grooves' after January 2011 the ruling bodies have been lenient to the amateur golfer. As long as you aren't playing in Pro competitions you can still play with pre-2011 grooved Wedges until 2024.
How is it different for Professional Golfers? Tour Pros have been using 'conforming' Wedges since January 2010. The ruling will decrease the backspin and increase stopping distances pros achieve from grassy lies. This means that hitting the fairways will be much more important, and 'bombing and gouging' may become a trend of the past. It SHOULD make for more interesting and competitive golf.
